2. Attalus opened the discussion in the council. He began with the services of his forefathers and himself, in general to all Greeks and especially to the Boeotians, but being now an old man and [2] too feeble to endure the strain of speaking, he fell silent and collapsed, and while he was being carried out [3] and the report brought back that he had partially lost the use of his limbs, the assembly was adjourned for a time. [4] Aristaenus, praetor of the Achaeans, spoke with the greater effect because he gave the Boeotians the same advice he had previously given the Achaeans. [5] Quinctius himself added a few words, in praise of the loyalty of the Romans rather than of their military strength or material resources. [6] A motion was then proposed and read by Dicaearchus of Plataea, about forming an alliance with Rome, and since no one dared to speak against it, it was received and carried by the unanimous consent of the Boeotian cities. [7] The meeting then adjourning, Quinctius, having remained in Thebes only as long [8] as the sudden illness of Attalus demanded, when it appeared that the attack did not for the moment imperil his life, but merely weakened his body, left him there to receive the necessary treatment and returned to Elatia, whence he had come; [9] having brought the [p. 283]Boeotians, as well as the Achaeans before them, -¹ into the confederacy and made the country behind him secure and peaceful, he now turned all his attention towards Philip and what remained of the war.
